INJECTION MOLDING / COOLING REQUIREMENTS

These are very good rules of thumb. Double check all figures before proceeding with your project.

One ton of Mold Cooling is equivalent to X # per hour of ::

mold cooling example -

cycle 30 seconds, part 1 lb., HDPE

(3600/30) = 120 parts HR

120 parts * 1 lb = 120 # per hr.HDPE

120# per hr / 30 = 4 tons of cooling

Multiply tons by 2.4 for minimum GPM

30# HDPE

35# LDPE AND PP

40# NYLON

50# PS or ABS

65# PVC or Poly Carb

70# PET

Horse Power of Electric Motor driving

GPM of a Hydraulic pump multiplied by

".1" will give the oil heat exchanger tonnage.

Multiply this by 3 for minimum GPM

example-

75 horsepower motor

75 *.1 = 7.5 tons

7.5 tons * 3 = 22.5 gpm

Other Equipment
  • Feed throat of molding machine
1 ton above 400 ton

1/2 ton below 400 ton

  • Air compressor
.16 tons of cooling  per HP w/out after cooler

.2 tons of cooling per HP w/after cooler

  • Hot runner Mold
1 ton of cooling for every  10.5 KW of heaters
  • Pump HP

    to drive continuous

    60 gpm @2000 psi

    60 * 2000 / 3000 = 48 HP

GPM * pressure (ft. head)
